Frequently Asked Questions

Every prosthesis will look and function a little differently. Your unique physical needs, body makeup, and vocational needs are taken into consideration in the development and design. Advanced technology like myoelectric prosthetics, elevated vacuum, and gels can also help to improve mobility and ensure that your prosthesis fits securely and comfortably.

How does a prosthesis work?

How do I make sure my prosthesis will fit?

In prosthetics, comfort equals function. Your prosthetist will work for you throughout the process to make sure you’re as comfortable as possible. After the initial fitting, it’s important to follow up for continuous visits. We’ll help you to identify potential problems and work with you to avoid setbacks.

When can I get fitted for a prosthesis?

If you have had an amputation, it generally takes 4-8 weeks from surgery before you can be fitted for a prosthesis. It’s important that you have fully healed. Your prosthetist will help you to manage swelling so you can be fitted. In the meantime, guided exercise and rehabilitation will help you recover your strength and mobility.

Orthoses are designed to support your body and improve your mobility. Whether it’s custom or off-the-shelf, your brace or insert will be specially fit to your body and adjusted to keep you comfortable.

How do orthoses work?

You should plan on regular follow-up visits to your prosthetist. The fit and function of your device can change over time, so it’s important to check in and maintain communication. Small adjustments will make a big difference!
